My name is Charlie Dolman. (My playa name is Louder! Charlie because I talk quietly.) I'm writing to help make your upcoming desert experience more awesome.

I've been part of this amazing community for nearly 12 years and I've served as Burning Man's Event Operations Director since 2012. My job is to Make Things Happen & Get Shit Done (MTH & GSD) so you all can go to the big event. I LOVE the work that I do and I want to share some pro tips I’ve learned over the years with you.

Between now and the event, you will get five more emails from me with tips and tricks on how to prepare for your Burn this year. Although you probably already receive our year-round newsletter, the Jackrabbit Speaks (JRS), these special messages I will be sending are specifically for this year’s ticket holders. You don’t want to miss ‘em!

It may seem early to be thinking about Burning Man, but I assure you, it’s not! August will sneak up on us fast and, before we all know it, we’ll be in Black Rock City.

Ok, that brings me to the first thing (and some of you may nod in agreement with me)…

Becoming a citizen of Black Rock City is more than simply buying a ticket and showing up.

Let me repeat that.

You (yes, YOU) are ultimately responsible for contributing to the event and for the long-term survival of Black Rock City.

Let that sink in for a second.

If there’s one thing seasoned Black Rock citizens know it’s that Burning Man is a community and everyone’s participation is a HUGE part of the experience. I’ll have more tips about all that in an upcoming message, but for now…

That links to the Survival Checklist, which is really important. The Black Rock Desert, where the event takes place, WILL TRY TO KILL YOU. Not being prepared for the harsh environment is – frankly, inexcusable!
